Vision care has been revolutionized with the technology of laser vision correction. There are so many common vision problems that we are now able to treat because of it, including nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Fortunately, the advancements in technology have also made laser vision correction minimally invasive for our patients.

Variable Spot Scanning (VSS) is a high-class VISX laser technology that allows a larger area of the eye to be treated at once. We are now able to develop more personalized laser vision procedures because of this flexibility, especially in cases where we are considering the size of the pupil.

VISX, INC. developed their first Excimer laser in the early 1980s, and it was created to enhance the precision of changing the cornea’s shape. The previous technique, RK, used to use incisions, and the Excimer was eliminating this step. Northwest Eye Physicians utilizes the latest technology, the VISX Star S4 ActiveTrak Excimer Laser System that combines an active eye tracking system with variable beam technology. The ActiveTrak constantly has the laser beam directly on the eye during the entire procedure. This 3D tracker has the ability to track all eye movements so we do not need to dilate the pupil. This also ensures that the beam will be placed accurately, which can help our patients to feel more relaxed during the procedure.

Our patients are able to experience improved vision more quickly than before since the VISX STAR S4 variable beam technology allows for faster treatment times. It also provides a smoother surface and allows our surgeons to shape the beam to accommodate each of our patient’s individual correction needs.
